EvoLife

Dr. Maria Luisa Abesamis-Tiambeng, M.D., head of the CSMC Cancer Institute, M.D. explained that the immune system of cancer patients becomes more compromised when they become depressed. “The psychological scars caused by the physical manifestations of treatment, like rashes, skin discoloration, blackened nails and falling hair erode patients’ self-esteem and the will to fight. But psychological well-being is crucial to a successful treatment. If cancer patients feel low and miserable, their response to treatment is greatly affected. So if the side effects of treatment do not bother the patient, their treatment regimen becomes more tolerable, if not welcome. Products like Evolife can help make patients commit to their treatment regimen and achieve the ultimate cure. These innovative products can prove crucial in licking the Big C.”

Alleviating the Side Effects of Cancer Treatment

With the growing census of cancer incidence in the country, there is real concern in providing supportive care not only during treatment but more so when the treatment side effects start manifesting.

For cancer patients, managing the side effects is as important as addressing the cancer itself. According to doctors, side effects can compromise treatment and even recovery. According to Dr. Maria Luisa Abesamis-Tiambeng, M.D., head of the CSMC Cancer Institute, M.D.

Evolife products consist of skin care products (EvoSkin Gel Cream and Evolife Hydrating Skin Cleanser which provide a unique hydrating solution for skin side effects of cancer therapy such as cracks, dryness and a burning sensation), oral care products (EvoMucy mouthwash and spray for mouth sores, EvoLip for chapped or sensitive lips, EvoDry mouth spray to combat mouth and throat dryness and EvoDonto toothpaste for sensitive and irritated gums), a scalp care product (EvoCapil hydrating hair spray that calms the scalp and rejuvenates hair follicles to encourage hair re-growth), a hygiene product (EvoDeo Deodorant Spray, an alcolohol-free deodorant spray for hypersensitive skin controls hot flashes and excessive sweating) and nail care products (EvoNail which helps revitalize darkened, yellow, brittle or cracked nails and restores them to their natural state).

Cancer patient, Tina, who underwent  chemotherapy and radiotherapy, experienced mouth sores and burning sensations on her skin. “The mouth sores were too painful to eat anything so I lost a lot of weight. After my doctor recommended EvoMucy mouth wash the sores disappeared in 3 days for good. This helped me regain my energy as I went through with my treatment. I also used EvoSkin Gel Cream and EvoNail. After using it for a few days, the burning sensation went away and my nails did not blacken at all, unlike other patients undergoing treatment.”

This new product line will complement the existing cancer treatment regimen being offered by Unilab  and will provide a wholistic supportive care program for cancer patients.
In a concerted effort to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Point of Care Solutions Inc. (PCSI) in partnership with United Laboratories recently introduced Evolife products to the Philippines.

PCSI is the exclusive distributor of Evolife’s full range of cancer-support care products that treat the cutaneous and cutaneous-mucuos side effects induced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Evolife products are the result of years of research and development by a dedicated team of dermatologists, oncologists, and scientists based in France. Evolife Products contain a unique blend of natural minerals that provide premium hydration and protection for patients undergoing cancer treatment. They are the first and only products of their kind that are effective, uniquely designed with the needs of cancer patients in mind, and they are well tested,” says oncologist J.F. Chanez in “The Neurogenic Component of Cutaneous Toxicities Induced by Chemotherapy – New Solutions”, European Oncology Journal, Vol 6:1, 28-30.

Be Alert This Dengue Season

Dengue is and has always been a big problem in the Philippines. Yet, after 60 years since the first outbreak, there is still no known cure. In fact, the virus might even be getting worse. Today, a new species of Dengue mosquito exists. Aedes albopictus is known to bite during nighttime, while the original mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is known to only bite during the day.

Both mosquitoes are native to tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia. They like to live close to humans because they are attracted to the chemical compounds human beings emit. Thus, it comes as no surprise that they breed and lay eggs in places near or inside homes, particularly in areas with stagnant water. The mosquitoes’ constant contact with bacteria makes them prime vehicles for transferring diseases like Dengue into humans.
The bite of the Aedes Dengue mosquito can cause symptoms like fever, rashes, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, body pain, bleeding, and even death. With now two species of dangerous mosquitoes on the loose, it is more important than ever to be on alert when protecting loved ones from this deadly disease. But without a cure, the best defense against Dengue is prevention.

Stanhome World, the No. 1 Direct-Selling Home Care Company in the European Union, shares surefire ways to avoid getting Dengue during this rainy season:

1.    Eliminate the mosquitoes’ breeding places.
The Department of Health says Dengue cases abound in suburban communities where junk shops, vulcanizing shops, tires on tops of roofs, backyard piggeries, and underdeveloped subdivisions become natural breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  Stop them from breeding by discarding all forms of stagnant water from jars, bottles, drums, auto tires, flower/plant pots, trash cans, coconut husks and other materials that collect rain or run-off water. Also, check the gutter and canals in your home and clean them thrice a week to remove water deposits.

 2.    Don’t give mosquitoes access to your home.
Prevent mosquitoes from coming inside the house by adding screens to your windows and doors. Better yet, safeguard your home with Citronella. This substance has a scent that is known to effectively repel mosquitoes and other insects, keeping them from coming near. STANHOME Banish Citronella is an Odor Neutralizer which keeps out mosquitoes while taking away the bad odors from inside and outside your home. If you want the indoors to be both protected and fresh-smelling, use STANHOME Stan-wick Citronella, a Home Deodorizer that emits a clean and fresh Citronella scent that welcomes your guests and rejects the pests.

3.    Protect yourself
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to attack in the daytime, so it is important to keep your body protected when you leave the house. Wear light-colored, long sleeved shirts or jackets, socks, long pants, and other garments that will cover your skin. If you can’t avoid using shorts or short-sleeved tops, rub insect repellent all over your exposed skin. STANHOME Insect Repellent Gel creates a protective barrier on the skin, repelling insects and mosquitoes for at least 7.5 hours. It’s dermatologically-tested, and is safe enough to be applied on one’s face.

With all this information in mind, you can be secure that you and your family are protected from the perils of Dengue. Put them into practice, and you’re sure to enjoy a worry-free, dengue-free life.

For more information about Banish Citronella, Stan-Wick Citronella and Insect Repellent Gel, follow STANHOME WORLD on Twitter (@StanhomeWorldPH), be a fan on Facebook (facebook.com/StanhomeWorldPhilippines), or call/text 091-STANHOME (09178264663). You can also get these effective anti-dengue products from Stanhome World Independent Supervisors (SIS) or at Stanhome World Service Centers in Metro Manila, Pampanga, Batangas, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Zamboanga, Butuan City and Kidapawan.

Globe Telecom will donate P1 million to UNICEF Philippines

Globe Telecom, in partnership with UNICEF Philippines, will donate P1 million to UNICEF’s Maternal and Newborn Health program as part of its My Rewards, My Globe campaign.

A corporate social responsibility partner of UNICEF since September 2011, Globe Telecom through UNICEF and partners, embarked on the rCHITS initiative, which stands for ‘Real-time Monitoring of Key Maternal and Child Health Indicators through the use of the Community Health Information Tracking System’. rCHITS is a computerization project aimed at achieving a more effective and efficient system of managing health information on children and women, particularly those living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

“The funding support from Globe will go towards expanding the rCHITS program to reach more provinces in the coming year. Through this program, we are able to gather and consolidate real-time data on mother and child health indicators and help the local government make informed and well-planned decisions on health issues in their provinces,” said  Tomoo Hozumi, Country Representative, UNICEF Philippines.

Originally conceived as an advocacy tool in support of community-based injury prevention, the project evolved into a computer-based system targeted primarily at serving community health centers. In 2011, rCHITS expanded through the collaboration of UNICEF, University of the Philippines National Telehealth Center (NThC) and Globe to develop a system specifically designed to monitor and obtain key maternal and child health indicators in selected municipalities towards achievement of Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5, which is reduction of child mortality and improvement of maternal health.

“Accessibility—whether to improve education or health—is one of our major thrusts and we fully support UNICEF and the National Telehealth Center in their initiatives to improve integrating local health information. We hope, through the support of Globe Telecom, we are able to empower the decision makers of local government units to enjoy on-demand information on health and other relevant programs to reach an informed decision through the rCHITS program. We hope to help bridge disparities in access to health care,” said Roberto Nazal, Corporate Social Responsibility Head of Globe Telecom.

“We are happy to partner with UNICEF Philippines in promoting one of their advocacies and supporting it via our My Rewards, My Globe campaign. With rewards now at 50% off, our subscribers can now redeem more rewards for themselves and for their loved ones. For a more rewarding experience, Globe is making a donation to UNICEF Philippines to benefit mothers and newborns, inspiring more subscribers to redeem more rewards because of this worthy cause,” adds Jay Beltran, Globe’s Head of Customer Lifecycle Management.

Online Revolution: Flawless Enters New Era with Digital Efforts

Just a month before it celebrates its 11th anniversary, the country’s preferred clinic for face, body and medical services, Flawless, marks several milestones as it formally launches its new digital face and voice.

Whether we like it or not, the Philippines has evolved to become one of the world’s biggest online communities. Ranking 8th among countries with the biggest number of Facebook users worldwide, the Philippines is also the 10th biggest Twitter nation with over 9.5 million active users. A great feat considering that only 30% of Filipinos have access to the Internet, these numbers served as the basis for Flawless’ most recent digital efforts.

Flaunt

Last April 2012, Flawless launched an online magazine on issuu.com to replace the brand’s monthly newsletter. Aptly named “Flaunt,” the digital publication is intended to be Flawless’ signature online editorial habitat.

“We launched Flaunt mainly to better get our message across an array of audiences,” shares Rubby Sy, CEO of Flawless. “The problem with newsletters is that only a number of people get to read them and they’re forgettable and lack impact. If you’re not part of our mailing list, the chance of you receiving monthly content from us is close to zero. Likewise, if you do, by chance, receive emails from us, there’s a big possibility that you’ll skip opening what we sent. Launching a digital magazine is the wisest way around these challenges. Not only are we now able to send out our messages across a wider market, we also do so using a platform that evokes the
kind of lifestyle we promote—fun and dynamic
   yet sensible.”

Much like the brand it represents, Flaunt was founded on the premise of making beauty accessible to everyone. From beauty tips courtesy of Flawless’ acclaimed roster of Skin Professionals to stories of human interest, the publication aims to improve the quality of life people have by giving them the tools they need to achieve the most beautiful expression of themselves.

“In more ways than one, Flaunt is an extension of Flawless. This is why my team and myself strive really hard to incorporate as much of ourselves into our content. The Internet offers unprecedented opportunities for readers to engage with ideas and stories beyond those seen in traditional publications. Traditionally, companies have used their websites for sales and marketing. We believe they should also use their websites to publish," Sy adds.

New and Improved Digital Domain

With more and more companies enhancing their digital presence, Flawless has also implemented new improvements in its website to extend its products and services to more netizens.

“This is the first time that we’ll be updating our website since launching it 2 years ago,” shares Flawless’ Business Manager, Drew Donovan-Mendoza. “After 11 successful years in the business, we thought it’s only proper we do something to improve the experience our customers get when they visit our site. It’s a very personal change; kind of like refurbishing your home. You don’t just want to improve the aesthetic aspects of the space, you also want to make it functional and most importantly, you want it to reflect your personality.”

Adding more value to its revamped look, the new website serves as a goldmine of information for beauty and wellness aficionados. It hosts Flawless’ full line of first-rate products and services including its revolutionary four-way slimming and body sculpting program, Shape & Sculpt. A separate section is dedicated to highlighting the brand’s franchise program.

“What do people need? This was the first thing we wanted to address when we were designing the new site. We want it to be a reflection of what we stand for. More than just serving as a platform for us to be able to reach a wider audience, we want the new site to serve as a portal where people can go and schedule consultations, look for solutions to their skin problems, make purchases—we want something that people can  use and go to for their own benefit,” shares Donovan-Mendoza.

Flawless’ Marketing Manager, Patricia Mendoza adds, "In revamping our website, our main focus was not about our preference on design and features but more about improving the overall online experience of current and potential patients. The website design, navigation and sections were mapped out to reflect the mindset of someone looking for information on a certain product or service and ready to make a purchase decision. We want to make it easy and convenient for our patients to look for what they want may it be product information, how a particular service is done, nearest clinic location, inquire about franchising or simply to book an appointment with the clinic."

“One of the main highlights of the site is the e-commerce. This was borne out of a number of requests from Filipinos abroad to make our products available for shipping to other countries. I’m personally very proud of this feature because it takes us one step closer to realizing this,” ends Donovan-Mendoza.

A New Voice

In its efforts to better connect with its target market, Flawless recently revamped the way the brand interacts with the rest of the online community.
One of the biggest innovations that really made a huge impact in the lives of netizens all over the world is the rise of social networking sites. Allowing people to stay connected, share information, play all sorts of games and expand their networks, these portals quickly found a way to fit in the daily lives of people regardless of their social and economic status. Realizing the unlimited potential social networking sites possess in terms of customer engagement, companies were quick to find creative ways to use the medium.

“Now more than ever, companies are able to extend their reaches. As time goes by, companies are getting cleverer in terms of building their brand’s reputation online. It’s a very tricky process because one wrong move can break you. However, if done properly, the rewards are well worth it,” shares Pat Mendoza, Marketing Manager of Flawless.
Known for introducing ground-breaking aesthetic concepts to Filipinos, Flawless makes another first as it revamps the brand’s communication tone in an effort to “speak the language” of its market.
“Language and communications are two very dynamic subjects. We’ve been observing online trends since last year and one thing we found out is that people respond better to brands who speak the way they do,” adds Mendoza.

Veering away from the usual corporate-sounding tone that most companies use, Flawless, as seen in their Twitter and Facebook accounts, now uses a more humble and personal voice to interact with their audience. “Pal’s talk really works for us. More than anything, it’s able to break this long-standing connotation people have that we are a high-end brand. This is something that’s never been done here in the country and something we really want to encourage others to do. Depending on the nature of the product and service you’re offering, you can customize a tone that fits your brand. Just remember to still keep it professional,” Mendoza ends.

Appreciate East Asian Cuisine from Hong Kong Roast

Hong Kong Roast started out as a side business for Mary Chan who was inspired by her travels and gustatory adventures abroad. Featured in the Hong Kong Roast menu are favorite local dishes from Hong Kong. Mary recreated these dishes to provide a pocket of sincere, casual Chinese dining in the middle of busy, impersonal Makati.
The offerings on the menu are simple and straight to the point. No pretensions and no fancy presentations.
The Salted Baked Chicken is an easy favorite. Baked under a blanket of rock salt, the dish is in fact a gentler, simpler version of chicken, with only a slight tang of saltiness lingering in its meat despite its name. Another simple light dish to try is their Celery Fish. With its thick sauce and fresh bits of celery, the textures of crunch and softness immersed in the fullness of the sauce complement each other beautifully.
Some of the meatier dishes in the Hong Kong Roast menu are the Sate Beef Hofan, and the Barbeque Roast Pork. Each meat dish bears a distinct Chinese flavor. The thick noodles of the Beef Hofan are a great pair to the beef, while the sauce made from the drippings of the Barbeque Roast Pork definitely adds richness to the tender pork slices.
Sweet and Sour Pork, another dish that has been branded as a Filipino favorite, has found an authentic reincarnation in this restaurant, with the rendition perfectly balancing the two contrasting flavors.
As rice is a Filipino staple, the regular Filipino meal is never complete without it even with the most delectable viands. Hong Kong Roast does it right with their lively Yang Chao Fried Rice.

Now, there are no more excuses to appreciate the rich cuisine we have inherited from our East Asian neighbors.

Busy Celebrity Moms Take Time to Nourish Themselves

Moms of today can surely say there is nothing more challenging yet so fulfilling, than being a mother. They don’t settle for anything but the best for their kids, especially when it comes to nourishing them. Moms make sure they provide the most nutritious food to make sure their children grow up healthy.

Indeed, they enjoy their mommy duties, but also recognize the need to take care of themselves. Some celebrity moms discovered that they can actually nourish themselves by using products that nourish their babies.

Renowned celebrity and soap opera queen, Judy Ann Santos, has lived almost all her life in the spotlight and is definitely used to being in-demand. But no amount of tasks and schedules keep her away too long from her number 1 priority - her precious kids Yohan and Lucho. Despite being busy, she looks radiant nowadays and is not afraid to share that the secret to her nourished skin is the wash of Lucho - JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk Bath.

Ria Tanjuatco-Trillo is also used to handling her busy broadcasting schedule. With 14 years of experience in the industry, she lived out this passion as anchor of “News Central” and “Breakfast” on Studio 23 and currently as the host of “Shoptalk” on ANC. Now, as a mother of Rocio, Mikel, Raquel and one on the way, she continues doing what she loves best while staying on-top of her duties as a mother. She relieves stress by playing with her kids, goes on dates with her husband and pampers herself. And when asked what keeps her beautiful, and her skin beaming, she shares it’s surprisingly the same wash she used on her kids, JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk Bath.

Being busy and juggling motherhood is also nothing new to celebrity chef Rosebud Benitez. Since debuting on TV as a chef-host on QTV’s “Ka-Toque”, and now moving on with her own cooking show, “Quickfire: 10-Minute Kitchen Wonders” on GMA News TV 11, she has balanced being a chef, a TV personality and a mom to Katrina and Kyle quite well. As a chef, she believes in nurturing herself and her family by eating healthy.

For busy moms like Judy Ann, Ria and Rosebud, JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk believes in the importance of nourishing mothers, too. This is why they recently celebrated a day of nurturing moms in Mom’s Nourishing Spa at Watsons, SM Makati. Moms were treated to a free hand spa to experience the nourishing benefits of JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk Bath and Lotion, and were served good for the skin treats such as chocolates, nuts and yogurt. The event was hosted by Ria Tanjuatco-Trillo, and Chef Rosebud shared scrumptious recipes to nourish the skin. Like Ria and Chef Rosebud, top mommy bloggers, media and consumers definitely experienced a nourishing break from their busy mom schedules that day. Luckily, they can use JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk Bath and Lotion everyday to keep their skin baby-soft and baby-smooth.
JOHNSON’S® Baby Milk Bath 200mL is priced at PHP 76.25 and Lotion 200mL is priced at PHP 125.00.  Available in all leading stores. Like Johnson’s Baby Philippines on Facebook for more information.

AAAP Holds Seminar on Policy Issues Affecting Adults with Autism

The Association for Adults with Autism Philippines (AAAP) will hold an educational seminar on diagnostic, treatment, and policy issues affecting adults with autism.
The seminar will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Justitia Room, 4/F, Ateneo Law School, Rockwell Center, Makati City.
An all-Filipino panel of specialists based in Manila and the US are the featured speakers:
· Autism Spectrum Disorders: Criteria and Causes. Speaker: Lirio Sobrevinas Covey, Ph.D., Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center, New York
· Philippine laws on the rights of persons with disabilities. Speaker: Atty. Nina Patricia Sison-Arroyo, Assistant Director, Ateneo Legal Services Center, Ateneo De Manila University
· Medical and pharmacological interventions for persons with autism. Speaker: Christine Leonor Ma. C. Conducto, M.D., DPPS, Fellow, Philippine Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
· A comprehensive framework for understanding autism and the families with autism. Speaker: Ma. Lourdes “Honey” Carandang, Ph.D., President, Metropolitan Psychological Corporation
· Enhancing creativity among persons with disabilities. Speaker: Erlinda F. Camara, Ph.D. University of the Philippines
· Residential community living for adults with autism: the Life-sharing Model. Speaker: Ronald Sanchez, M.A., Director, Camphill Community, Santa Cruz, California
Autism is among the most prevalent conditions recognized during childhood. It has been estimated that there are close to 1 million Filipinos with autism. Caring for a child with autism is considered one of the most difficult of parental challenges. An additional challenge is that autism is a life-long condition. About a third of persons who meet the clinical diagnosis of autism may be able to lead independent lives as adults, but the greater majority will be dependent on caregivers to meet their daily needs throughout their lives.
There are few resources in the Philippines for persons with autism, even children and virtually none for Filipino adults with autism. As persons with autism approach adulthood, their family members begin to ask themselves the anguished question - Who will take care of my child when I am no longer able to?
Meeting this need is the mission of AAAP - to draw attention to the needs of adults with autism, to improve the quality of their lives, and to provide a safe, comfortable, productive, and long-term context for them, in the company of their peers.
The seminar is the first in a series of educational and training programs designed to build capacity for meeting the wide breadth of caregiving issues concerning adults with autism. Donations and proceeds from the seminar will go to the construction fund for the first residential community for Filipino adults with autism to be named “A Special Place”.
Further information about the seminar, AAAP, and A Special Place can be obtained at http://adultautismphil.wordpress.com. Inquiries may also be directed to AAAP officers at adults_with_ autism@yahoogroups.com.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

In celebration of the 20th year of National Children's Month, UNICEF brings to the Philippines a unique tradition that has saved millions of lives of children each year-through the efforts of children themselves.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Superheroes campaign was launched at the The Mega Atrium, SM Megamall. the Philippine launch included a kid's party with fun games, face painting and superhero cosplay. Children and parents signed up at Trick or Treat registration booths for their free kits to help raise money for disadvantaged children in the Philippines and worldwide.
Halloween celebrations in the Philippines have grown bigger every year, with children dressing in costumes and gathering candies from family, friends and neighbors. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF aims to bring special meaning to this celebration. Children who participate in the campaign will collect money in a special Trick-or-Treat registered box and turn over to UNICEF after Halloween, which will be used for the organization's programmes for children.
"With their energy and enthusiasm, Trick-or-Treaters for this campaign can collect donations that will contribute to better health, nutrition, water and sanitation and protection of other children. It is an example of Kids Helping Kids as it has been practiced since the Trick-or-Treat campaign was started in the United States more than 60 years ago", said Tomoo Hozumi, UNICEF Country Representative.

Lizzy Borromeo aged 9 years and her sister Sophie aged 7 years joined other children in the fun games and activities before signing up for their Trick-or-Treat Kits. "I like it because I can help other children so they can go to school just like us," shared Lizzy.
At the launch, UNICEF provided registered children with orange Trick-or-Treat collection boxes, IDs and T-shirts so that they can be identified as bona fide donation collectors for UNICEF.

The grand launch hosted by Janeena Chan and Gerard Sison was made possible through the support of the Philippine Star, SM Megamall, SM Cares, UP Cradle Volunteers, P&G, Krispy Kreme, Magnavision, Multiply.com, Mango Comics and PSICOM Publishing.
School participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign this year are Australian International School, Britesparks International School, Galileo Enrichment and Learning Center, Integrow Activity Learning Center, La Salle Green Hills, Multiple Intelligence International School and Reedley International School.

About Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
The tradition of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began in 1950 in the United States, when Philadelphia schoolchildren first went door-to-door at Halloween collecting money in decorated mild cartons to help children in need around the world.
They raised a grand total of $17, kicking off a campaign that has since brought in millions of dollars each year to help UNICEF provide medicine, better nutrition, safe water, education, emergency relief and other support to children in more than 150 countries.

Millions of children now participate in Halloween-related fundraising campaigns in the United States, Canada and Hongkong, China, among other places. In these campaigns, children go for beyond trick or treating in scary costumes with the familiar orange UNICEF collection boxes in hand. Children and young people take part in various fun and educational events that help them gain a better understanding of child rights and challenges facing children around the world-including poverty, killer diseases and armed conflict.
This global campaign, now in the Philippines, has raised more than  $167 million around the world and remains  an inspiration to the young (and the young at heart) to further the cause of children everywhere.
