Belgian Fries

Flanders Agricultural Marketing Board (VLAM) will be bringing together five major Belgian fries exporters to exhibit as a group at WOFEX Manila 2018 slated from August 1 to 4. The five companies, Agristo, Bart’s Potato Company, Clarebout Potatoes, Ecofrost and Mydibel, will be participating at this trade show under the “Belgian Fries” banner to widen their networks, increase their share in the Philippines’ growing market for processed potato products, and heighten awareness of Belgian fries in the Philippines and the region. This is the first time that the delicious Belgian fries are being presented in the Philippines at such a scale.

These five companies represent the five biggest family-owned businesses in the industry in Belgium offering a wide range of potato products and specialties that are exported to over 100 countries worldwide. The companies are all halal-certified. Their participation in WOFEX Manila is part of a five-nation promotion campaign in Southeast Asia, coordinated by VLAM and Belgapom, the association for the Belgian potato trade and processing industry.

“Hot on the heels of exhibiting in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam, we are pleased to bring Belgian fries to the Philippines this time around, as part of our plan to increase our presence in the Southeast Asian region. There is an existing market in this region for our products, but we see an even bigger opportunity to expand exports and heighten appreciation for our national delicacy. Southeast Asia is one of the largest fast-growing regions of the world, with a rising middle class, rapid urbanisation and an overall young population. These trends, together with Belgium’s high food standards and innovation, will continue to drive demand in the region and beyond, and our industry is ready to reply to this in an original way, since our Belgian fries are truly different from those from other countries,” said   Mr. Romain Cools from Belgapom.

“The Philippines is well-known as a food-lover’s paradise, and Philippine consumers really know and love good food. Belgian fries are still relatively unknown in the Philippines, so we are excited about this opportunity to share one of Belgium’s most beloved national dishes with the Philippines. Golden yellow and crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, Belgian fries, or frites, as we call them, are a true Belgian delicacy that is delicious either as a side served with steak, or as an appetizing snack with a mayonnaise-based sauce!”

Belgium is the largest exporter of frozen fries in the world, with 90% of its production freighted to the global market. In 2016, Belgian fries exports rose 14.3% to 1.68 million tonnes in 2016 from a year earlier, with an increasing share going to countries outside EU.

Belgian fries have a long history and have become part of the country’s heritage, with many shops and stands in Belgium serving this delicious savory snack. In fact, the ubiquitous Belgian fry shops that can be found in every city or village have been recognised as part of the cultural landscape in Belgium, with UNESCO status being sought for the dish since 2014.

Kick-start the Learning Experience with Licealiz

Back-to-school season is finally here. While it’s time to say goodbye to beach trips and playdates under the sun, there is no need to say adiós to clean, lice-free hair. Although it is a challenge for mommies, children could still maintain good hair hygiene despite spending most of their time with classmates and friends.

Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo recently addressed this challenge and provided an easy solution for concerned mothers through its Kick-starting the Learning Experience workshop. Through this learning session, moms and daughters were given a fun bonding experience while at the same time picking up tips on how to keep those tresses flawless and expressing their personality and creativity.

There was a lecture on basic hair care, including ways on preventing head lice infestation, to teach the mothers on how to prepare well for the school season, especially in ensuring that their child’s health remains uncompromised by threats such as pediculosis or head lice infestation.

For school girls, fashionable hairstyles are the definite hype which is why there was a hairstyle tutorial that instructed mommies how to style preppy, easy-to-do hairstyles that their kids can pull off at school.  To ensure that the day was one that both the moms and kids enjoyed, they were also treated to an educational tour at The Mind Museum to feed the kids with new learnings and experiences.

Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo, an affordable, non-toxic formula that is clinically-proven to kill lice and nits, hopes to not only help mothers maintain their children’s head lice-free, but to also provide the children with the opportunity to satisfy their thirst for learning.

Getting the adrenaline pumping is APCC’s latest addition of headliner: No less than Tye Sheridan, the ambitious Gunter Wade Watts from Steven Spielberg’s Hollywood box-office blockbuster, Ready Player One.

Tye Sheridan, best known for playing lead mutant Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, made his film debut in the critically-acclaimed The Tree of Life, and has also starred in drama films such as Mud, Joe, and The Stanford Prison Experiment. Sheridan will reprise his role as Cyclops on the next X-Men movie, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is set to be released later this year.

Sheridan will grace the convention together with Finn Jones, the titular character in the popular Marvel series Iron Fist and Loras Tyrell in Game of Thrones. But there’s more in store for everyone as the world of #NetflixAPCC will be back at AsiaPOP this year, bigger and better than ever with more surprises awaiting Netflix fans.

This will be everyone’s Destination Fun, where the public will get to experience their favorite shows come to life, take photos, win swag, and have a lot of fun. The streaming service is also encouraging its fans to Unleash Your Love by dressing up like Eleven or any of the Netflix characters you love and swing by Netflix booth to share the fun with your barkada!

Join the excitement as Netflix will also have a special panel session where it will bring onstage Netflix stars and share never-seen-before footage from upcoming shows. With all this, the main stage and main floor will definitely come alive with one of the convention’s biggest attractions!

Back to spill more creative juices on the AsiaPOP Comicon main floor is digital artist extraordinaire Stanley Lau a.k.a. artgerm, whose works are famous all over the world for a style that perfectly blends the best of Western and Eastern aesthetics. Aside from being an illustrator, he is also a designer, concept artist, and co-founder of the acclaimed Imaginary Friends Studios.

Added to the lineup is cosplayer, model, actress, and live-streamer Vera Chimera, who got her big break as Lilith the Siren in the game Borderlands 2. Vera's recent projects include several Overwatch events, where she cosplays the zippy pistol-toter Tracer, with Blizzard Entertainment, as well as a slew of local and international conventions.

Not to be outdone is the return of Yugana Senshi Uon. A cosplayer since 2013, her creepy-cool portrayals of various pop culture characters has made her a mainstay in events all over Asia and the world, appearing for various brands and judging cosplay competitions. Her work has been featured all over the world through publications such as Smoosh, Cosplay Culture, and Cosplayzine.
