The ABCs of Jesus’ Resurrection

(Press Release)

Hiyas, the children’s book imprint of OMF Literature, launched last December 4 a new book, The ABCs of Jesus’ Resurrection, written by Vince Burke and illustrated by Lorra Angbue-Te. In this book, children can learn about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ through each letter of the alphabet. Written in rhymed verse, the book shares key concepts of the Resurrection in simple terms which children as young as five years old can appreciate.

“The truth that Jesus Christ died and rose again to save us is the most important message children can know and believe,” author Vince Burke writes in the introduction. He has been with the teaching and preaching ministry of Christ’s Commission Fellowship since 1994.  An American with a Filipino heart, Vince, his wife Lori, and their four children lived in the Philippines for 18 years. He says, “I wrote this book because kids are fully loved by Jesus and vitally important to His kingdom.” This is his first published children’s book.

Accompanying the text are the warm and wonderful illustrations of watercolor artist Lorra Elena Angbue-Te.  Lorra says, “Illustrating The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection was definitely an emotional roller coaster for me. There were days when I felt so under skilled to finish the task entrusted to me, especially since this was my first solo book as an illustrator and I was dedicating it to God. But on the other hand, I also felt so much grace and strength because of that same reason. This year, God has given me so much more than I deserve, and this project felt like my song of praise for Him. It became my big thank you to Him.”  Lorra blogs in starsfordreams.com and maintains with her husband Elbert a weekly online comic strip called “Homeycomb.”

The book can be used as Sunday school material, reference in Bible class, or a tool for teaching young children the alphabet.

The ABCs of Jesus’ Resurrection will be available at OMF Lit bookshops, Passages bookshops, PCBS, National Book Store and other leading bookstores nationwide for P70. The book will also soon be available in e-book format. For more information about the book, please call OMF Lit bookshop at +63(2)531 43 03 local 411 or email hiyas@omflit.com.

Bonifacio Global City Holiday Family Activities

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) literally wraps up the development in holiday cheer with larger than life gift bows to mark the season.  Colored in festive red and white, these bows transform several buildings and lamposts into eye catching attractions.   And in Bonifacio High Street, monumental pieces are sprinkled along this outdoor mall, ready and waiting for eager shoppers to take their selfies and holiday photos.

At the heart of all of this, are a series of activities and events geared towards the ever growing and thriving passionate community.

The festivities kick into full swing starting December 5.  Classic BGC programs and activities such as BGC Impromptu, BG Art Mart and Chalk the Walk take on a jollier approach  - balancing the development's distinct personality and the feel of a traditional Christmas.
Grab your friends and a bucket of popcorn for Small Screen Goes Big.  This unique outdoor screening features holiday episodes of popular TV shows.

Immerse yourself in a sea of lights and music as the Christmas Box Spectacular radiates from the main stage every night.  The Wandering Minstrels jingle all the way singing familiar holiday tunes. Look forward to a performance by the Metro Manila Orchestra on December 6 plus A Christmas Symphony at Bonifacio High Street on December 19 featuring a very special guest.  Even the BGCitizens take the stage.  Globe, Deutsche Bank, St. Luke's Medical Center, the NET Group and The Mind Museum to name a few are sending their employees to share their talents with the community.

Grab a Santa Hat by presenting receipts worth P2,500 from Bonifacio High Street establishments. Each hat will allow the wearer access to selected activities such as Meet and Greet Santa, Santa's Mail Station and Christmas Carriage Rides.  Alternatively, a donation of P500 can get you a Santa hat as well.  BGCitizens, however, need only present any proof of residence or employment to get one (1) free Santa hat.

BGC also takes this time to give back to the less fortunate communities of Taguig City.  Everyone is invited to donate gifts and wrap boxes on Saturdays of December.  Fort Bonifacio Development Foundation, Inc. will facilitate this activity as well as deliver these presents to the children of the different barangays.

Come to BGC and where Christmas celebrations are fully immersive, interactive and well-rounded for a truly unique experience in BGC.
For more information on BGC's full holiday schedule of activities, please email info@bgc.com.ph or visit www.bgc.com.ph and www.facebook.com/bonifacioglobalcityph.

On November 29, Passionfest's Bayanihan Parade will showcase the different communities and passions of BGCitizens, from environmentalist to car clubs to photography enthusiasts, and many more, complete with all theaccoutrements: beautifully decorated kalesas, live music, and colorfully-costumed dancers.

Don't have a particular day in mind yet?  Then just drop by the Sari-Sari Fiesta, which will run forthe entire weekend, providing visitors with food booths to satisfy every one of your cravings fofor local flavor.  Sample some regional delicacies, play some perya games, even join an eating contest if it strikes your fancy. All these will be rounded off with various art and culture activities all over BGC: cultural performances every hour along Bonifacio High Street, a Bambike-handmade bamboo bicycle-tour around the area, the BGC Art Mart, Chalk the Walk, and many more!

The Unilever Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Awards, run in partnership with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership  (CISL), and in collaboration with Ashoka, offer seven young people across the globe a total of more than P4M in financial support and individually tailored mentoring.  The overall winner also receives the prestigious HRH The Prince of Wales Young Sustainability Entrepreneur Prize.

The Awards are part of Unilever's effort to support the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development.  These ambitious goals set out to end extreme poverty, tackle climate change, empower women, secure universal water access, and reduce hunger by 2030.

This year, in support of its partnership with Global Citizen and Project Everyone, the company created eight categories of the 17 UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development which best align with its Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan. The eight categories are:

Global Goal 1 - No Poverty
Global Goal 2 - Zero Hunger
Global Goal 5 - Gender Equality
Global Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
Global Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
Global Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth
Global Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
Global Goal 13 - Climate Action

"Unilever supports the Global Goals because we see that there is not only a moral imperative, but that is also makes good business sense, " said Unilever Philippines chairman and CEO Rohit Jawa.
"And we created these awards for young people because they will be the guardians of sustainable development long into the future.  We believe that given the chance and the right support, young people around the world can create positive movements for change and a brighter future," he added.
Application and Announcement
The Awards are hosted online at Ashoska Changemakers (www.changemakers.com/globalgoals2015).  Applications must be submitted by the closing date of 12 midnight UK time on 18 November 2015.

Finalists will be announced in March 2016, with the Cambridge accelerator workshop and final judging in the following months.

The winners of the previous Awards demonstrate that innovative solutions can influence people across markets to buy smarter and live more sustainbly, and can provide businesses with tools to improve their productive, efficient and responsible use of natural resources.
The overall winner of last year's competition, Daniel Yu, developed a simple software solution that helps medical clinics in the developing world digitized and manage inventory records - delivering better outcomes for patients and improving efficiency across the supply chain.

Pfizer Strengthens Global Campaign on Bone Health, Calls on Filipinos to ‘Love Your Bones’

Being in my 40s, I need to make sure that my bones are healthy. I myself have some issues, got scoliosis. The event of Pfizer for Caltrate Plus gave me more knowledge on how to take care of my bones, as well as my whole being.

It is easy, or seemingly involuntary, to take things for granted when living in today’s fast-paced world. Health is almost secondary, as work is often given high priority. But to keep the body going, one needs food and nutrients for sustenance—the same goes for the need for strong bones to ensure continuous mobility and support.

Sadly, food and bone health, although considered vital life components, are still largely ignored, be it due to poor lifestyle or lack of awareness.

To help address this growing health problem, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare (PCH) partnered with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to spearhead the local celebration of World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) on October 20.

Aptly themed “Serve up Bone Strength,” WOD 2015 focuses on the importance of adopting a bone-healthy diet throughout a person’s lifetime to optimize bone strength. The campaign highlights the point that poor nutrition is one of the critical risk factors for developing bone-related diseases.

“It conveys the message that the first step in osteoporosis prevention begins in youth, when nutrition can help maximize our bone-building potential, and continues throughout life as we strive to maintain strong bones at older age,” explained IOF, the global organizer of WOD.

A key date in the bone, muscle, and joint community agenda, WOD is an occasion when people around the globe unite to put the spotlight on the immense burden caused by osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal diseases, and the actions that can be taken to prevent and treat them. It aims to put bone, muscle, and joint health on the global health agenda.

In the Philippines, PCH has remained a solid supporter of this global movement and has advocated various activities in the past to raise awareness on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

The Silent Disease

According to IOF, osteoporosis affects over 200 million people worldwide. Approximately one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone (also known as osteoporotic fracture) due to this silent disease.

Fractures, specifically hip fractures, can cause loss of function and independence with 40% of patients unable to walk independently; 60% requiring assistance a year later; 33% being totally dependent on or in a nursing home. Moreover, hip fractures cause the greatest morbidity with reported mortality rates up to 20-24% in the first year after a person suffers a hip fracture.

We at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare support the IOF in its advocacy to inform the people about osteoporosis and the fact that it can be prevented,” says Dr. Egbert Dorado, senior medical manager at PCH. “We echo IOF’s key message: Adequate intake of the right nutrients contributes to bone health at all ages, and is a first step in osteoporosis prevention. For those who already have osteoporosis, a bone-healthy nutrition should be part of their treatment and rehabilitation program.”

Three of the major nutrients that help optimize bone health are: calcium, vitamin D, and protein, with recommended daily allowances varying throughout life.

“Regulating calcium levels in the body promotes better bone mass density (BMD), alongside improving muscle performance and balance. Taking a calcium supplement with adequate levels of Vitamin D3 also helps maximize calcium absorption,” adds Dr. Egbert.

While proper nutrition works, it is also important to have a holistic approach to osteoporosis prevention and management.

“It is indeed crucial to build strong bones early in life by following a healthy diet as it is the key ingredient in helping a person achieve peak bone mass, and maintaining it throughout life. But it is equally important to avoid other modifiable risk factors including sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and alcohol use,” explains Dr. Egbert.

Osteoporosis is an incurable disease, but controlling its risk factors and complying with treatment regimens where prescribed can ensure a mobile, independent, and fracture-free life.

For more information on osteoporosis and World Osteoporosis Day 2015, visit www.worldosteoporosisday.org, follow IOF on Instagram (@worldosteoporosisday) or on Facebook (www.facebook.com/worldosteoporosisday), or subscribe to its YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/iofbonehealth).
