PATAK, A Benefit Show for Patrick Donald Teng Foundation

Patrick Donald Teng had an amazing vision in life. He dreamt of becoming a neuro surgeon and took up medicine at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. Not known to his own family, he supported charities while attending college and at the same time, offered much of his time doing volunteer work for different organizations and one of them was Hearts at Play.

Patrick was also an active member of The Company of Ateneo Dancers and was President of the Ateneo Medicine Dance Group. He brought joy to a lot of children through dance and even encouraged many of his group members to offer their time to make these children happy.

Unfortunately, all his amazing efforts had to take a side step when diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a rare type of brain cancer, which ended his dream of being a doctor. Despite his condition, his contagious positive outlook in life remained and Patrick continued his volunteer work even while in a wheelchair. He bravely fought for his recovery, but sadly, time dictated that he had to leave everything behind to join our Creator – gone too soon at the age of 25.

But as they say, everything has a season and a reason. Patrick’s parents were devastated and thought it best to continue what their loving son has started. In May 2017, the Patrick Donald Teng Foundation was founded in memory of their beloved son.

PATAK represents how a single drop in the water can create ripples in the ocean. It is a force, much like Patrick was. The concert will introduce the foundation by showing Patrick’s life and struggle with brain cancer, the lives he has touched, sharings by his doctors, and dance performances by various groups – all with the end goal of continuing what Patrick has started.

PATAK, a Benefit Show for Patrick Donald Teng Foundation is happening this  October 21, at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater, Ateneo de Manila University at 6:00PM.

For more information on tickets for PATAK, and to support the Patrick Donald Teng Foundation, please like Patrick Donald Teng Foundation on Facebook or call 0917 8390200.

What ‘Progressive’ Schooling Really Means for Britesparks International School

The word “progressive” signifies that something is newer, better adapted to the times than whatever it is being compared against.  These days, the idea of sending children to a “progressive school”, understandably, is something some parents might still be hesitant to subscribe to, given that the term might make it sound like some fad method. Why, after all, would a parent take a chance with a new approach, when they themselves went through a more traditional educational setup, and turned out fine anyway?

In Britesparks International School (BIS), one of the pioneer progressive schools in the country, “progressive” is more than just giving up traditional practices for the sake of novelty: it is the recognition that education must adapt to the times, must evolve alongside the society it is preparing children to enter in the future. “A traditional setup will not digest that some children may be naturally gifted in some aspects, and not as gifted in others. But there has to be a place that can see that potential in children, and that is Britesparks,” said Veronica Co, School President of BIS.

When BIS opened back in 2000, it was not yet the complete institution it is today. The institution began as a preschool for gifted children, the first of its kind with the drive to accommodate and include students with special needs in their usual classes.

Through the years, the school expanded its range of programs, eventually taking on elementary and high school students as well, while still keeping this advocacy of inclusiveness. The move to its current location in 2013 in Metropoli Drive, Bagumbayan was fairly recent, but such was a significant one which coincided with its increased capabilities.

Today, BIS accepts preschool to senior high school students, with its subject curricula complying with various local and international education standards: its Math and English are consistent with Common Core, a set of teaching standards used in over forty states in the US; its Science, ICT, Art and Music, and even French curricula are consistent with various other international school standards; and its Social Studies and Filipino methods fully comply with DepEd standards.

True to its progressive nature, however, BIS does not simply stop there: the institution recognizes the immense value of a child’s social development, which must occur alongside his academic development. The focus of the school’s methods is on the child, not the teacher: children learn through experience, collaborating through a wide range of constantly updated activities and projects which may cover multiple subjects at a time, consistent with the interconnectedness with which we process information around us today; a group project about cooking food can be an English, a Science, and a History lesson, all at the same time, as well as a subtler nudge toward the benefits of working together for something much more difficult to achieve by one’s lonesome.

When taken in the context of the school’s inclusive policy, it is no wonder that BIS students grow to be more tolerant and less discriminatory of those around them. “I’m proud of the fact that our students do not discriminate or bully those who are special. It’s really different; the children are so well-rounded and enlightened at times, you’ll be surprised,” said Co.

“Progressive” might sound vague, but go back to its roots—just like BIS, in all its approaches, has always anchored itself on its long-standing policies of inclusiveness and experiential learning—and we find a more concrete term, one that every parent wants in their child: progress. This is something BIS aims to deliver in all aspects, to ensure that the children of today grow into individuals fully prepared to face the challenges of the present and the future.

Britesparks International School classes start on August 1. For more information, visit www.britesparks.edu.ph or contact (02) 966-8120.

Manila Water Foundation Celebrates Global Handwashing Day (GHD)

As part of the international call to raise awareness on the importance of proper handwashing in preventing the spread of communicable diseases, Manila Water Foundation will once again lead a month-long celebration of the Global Handwashing Day (GHD).

MWF will visit schools, communities, and malls to teach about the seven steps of proper handwashing and the key moments when it should be practiced. To adhere to this year’s theme, “Our Hands, Our Future”, the series of events also aims to educate Filipinos about the role that it plays in keeping one’s health and in attaining a great future.

This year’s celebration was launched at The Mind Museum where actor and mother, Bettinna Carlos, shared why she supports proper handwashing as this year’s celebrity advocate.  “I support this advocacy because it’s actually the small and simple things that many people do not know that have big effects, such as proper handwashing. This can actually prevent children from having diarrhea and other diseases. As a parent, I am very intentional in teaching this small habit to my child because it will really affect her future,” she shared.

At the kick-off event, MWF also invited children being supported by the Educational Research and Development Assistance Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on providing educational assistance to elementary school pupils from less privileged families.

During the whole day of the exhibit, close to 1,000 schoolchildren who came from various schools in Metro Manila and nearby provinces along with their teachers and companions learned about the seven steps of proper handwashing, participated in interactive learning sessions, games, and experiments. These activities were concluded through actual washing of hands and by showing their support to the advocacy by signing their names on the pledge wall.

Aside from the event at The Mind Museum, MWF will be bringing the celebration to key locations in Luzon and Visayas. It will be followed by an event in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Clark, Pampanga, Quezon City, San Mateo Rizal, Enchanted Kingdom, Malay, Aklan, and Market! Market!.

To further this advocacy, MWF also aims to activate an online campaign through Facebook and a public chat via Viber. MWF also launched an educational AVP at key locations in EDSA through MMDA’s electronic billboard which will be played until October 31.

This year’s celebration is MWF’s fifth year to implement the campaign in the country. During the event, MWF President Geodino Carpio expounded on why MWF continues to support proper handwashing through GHD.  “Manila Water Foundation’s focus is on WASH or Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene. We implement that focus through a lot of information and education campaigns on the proper use of water, and part of that is promoting proper handwashing. Studies show that 272 million schooldays are lost every year because students are absent from school mainly because of diarrhea and other related diseases which are transmitted by having dirty hands. With us promoting regular and proper handwashing, we hopefully will one day cut that number down to zero and have much productive, happier, healthier, and more educated kids that will lead to a healthier world,” he shared.

He also shared that throughout the years, GHD was made possible by forging partnerships. Among those who shared their support to MWF’s 2017 Global Handwashing Day celebration are Green Cross, Pilot, and Philusa Corporation, with the special participation of Nescafe and Toy Kingdom. Venue partners include The Mind Museum, Enchanted Kingdom, and Market! Market! while helping promote the month-long activities and events are Rappler, Eagle Broadcasting Company, Viber, Business World, and Manila Standard.

TELUS International Philippines

TELUS International Philippines (TIP) was established in the Philippines 12 years ago distinguishing itself from other BPO companies through a caring company culture that puts its team members first. TIP has made its mark, not just in the business processing outsource (BPO) industry, but on its team members as well through engaging programs, events and activities that give them a change of pace from the corporate setting. These include corporate social responsibility events like TELUS Days of Giving, sports and wellness activities like the TELUS Healthy Living Cup, and a slew of parties and social events like the much awaited Town Hall.

To share a glimpse of what it‟s like to work inside the colorful and inspiring workspaces at TIP, the company held a mobile photography workshop for a select group of lifestyle bloggers at TELUS House McKinley West last September 28, 2017 with veteran and award-winning photographer, Paul Quiambao.

TELUS House McKinley West exudes a fun and laid-back vibe that is probably most evident in its array of themed meeting rooms, colorful hallways, and vibrant common areas. Once the elevator doors open in each floor, team members are immediately welcomed by halls reminiscent of a high school (but better!) --- vivid and multi-colored lockers embellished with cool and amusing keychains, chatty groups of people roaming the halls, friends in twos or threes making their way to the pantry.

The pantry is another exciting feature of the TELUS House McKinley West that lives up to its food park concept. Team members can choose between the many tables and chairs in the middle of the room, dining areas on one side that are designed to look like shipping containers, or simply lounge at the spacious wooden terraces on the other corner of the room. Right beside the pantry is a gaming area where team members can play rounds of darts and billiards. Or they can opt to work out at the gym, located just beside the pantry, where personal fitness coaches are always available to give workout tips, and where team members can exercise on state-of-the-art gym equipment while overlooking a lush and green park through floor-to-ceiling windows.

TELUS International takes meeting rooms very seriously. In fact, there are no two themed meeting rooms that are alike across any TELUS International site worldwide. And TELUS McKinley West houses a couple of standout ones. The Board Game Room, for instance, lets team members actually carry out the phrase "work and play" literally, with a huge black-and-white chess board on the ceiling, a life-sized playable tic-tac-toe on one wall, a full-length meeting table made out of legos, and chairs in the shape of puzzle pieces.

And one doesn't have to brave the harrowing Manila traffic to ride a utility vehicle -- the Jeepney Room's stainless steel exterior, complete with wheels and many hood ornaments, resembles a larger-than-life version of the country‟s most popular mode of transportation. Its ice cream-colored interiors look like that of a regular jeepney but cleaner and much more spacious.

Meanwhile, the Ocean Park Room, as its name suggests, transports team members in an underwater enclosure with cool blue interiors and sea life imagery.

Beyond these engagement efforts, TIP continues to prove that theirs is indeed a culture that cares by providing a working environment that captures and inspires the imagination. In its newest office at McKinley West, the global BPO offers a whole new set of work spaces designed specifically to delight their team members. “Unlike most BPO offices which were created for pure function and basic comfort, our workplace is designed to be an experience that will make your day better," said Warren Tait, TIP's Vice President for Brand, Marketing and Culture. "As our team members‟ second home, we want to make sure that the 8 to 9 hours they spend at work is spent surrounded by things that matter to them,” he added. “For us, it‟s all about the experience. Everything from the engagements and events that we celebrate, corporate social responsibility initiatives that we champion, the inspiring workplaces that we create, and the connections that we develop with our team members -- they all come together to shape the work experience that we want our team members to look forward to everyday," Tait shared.
