World Hemophilia Day on April 17

In celebration of the World Hemophilia Day on April 17, the Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love & Service (HAPLOS) will spearhead a national gathering of different Hemophilia groups and support organizations at the Glorietta Mall in Makati City on April 11 to 12.

Dubbed “Count Me In,” the two-day activity seeks to raise awareness and understanding about hemophilia and related bleeding disorders. The event expects to gather around 300 persons with these conditions, along with their families and friends.

Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, inherited platelet disorders, and other factor deficiencies are lifelong bleeding disorders that prevent blood from clotting properly.

People with bleeding disorders do not have enough of a particular clotting factor, a protein in blood that controls bleeding. The severity of a person’s bleeding disorder usually depends on the amount of clotting factor that is missing or not functioning. People with hemophilia can experience uncontrolled bleeding that can result from a seemingly minor injury. Bleeding into joints and muscles causes severe pain and disability while bleeding into major organs, such as the brain, can cause death.

According to the World Hemophilia Federation, about 10,000 Filipinos have hemophilia. On the other hand, there are about 1-million Filipinos possibly affeced with von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders. However, only around 1,200 have been identified.

Despite being considered as a serious and lifelong condition, awareness for hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and inherited bleeding disorders has not gained momentum in most countries including the Philippines. As a result, significant disparities in treatment still exist, with about 75 percent receiving very inadequate treatment or no treatment at all.

Through the event in Glorietta Mall, HAPLOS hopes to educate more people with the help of PWH themselves, and create a call to action in order to close the gap in care and treatment.

“Unlike other conditions, Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders receive little public awareness and attention. The World Hemophilia Day, celebrated by countries all over the globe, is an opportunity for the bleeding disorder community to come together, speak out, and focus on the need to improve and maintain treatment, as well as help those with the condition to live as normally as possible,” said HAPLOS President Ric Felipe.

“Count Me In” lead campaigner Andrea Echavez said the event serves as a call to action to those with hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders to be more active and be included in the National Hemophilia Registry.

“We want to encourage people with Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders that even though our condition is life-long, we can be productive members of the society,” Echavez, who has von Willebrand Disease, said.

A former Inquirer reporter and now a communication consultation of an international organization, she said many patients feel overwhelmed with their condition especially when they experience bleeds.

“Our quality of life is definitely different from those without disorders. And we are not dismissing what our fellow patients feel. Many times bleeds can be overwhelming. But it should not stop us from striving to lead normal lives,” Echavez said.

Count Me In campaign also calls for volunteers from outside the Hemophilia community, public support for the Hemophilia community, and for government to look into the plight of persons with hemophilia.

The two-day event will feature psycho-social activities for children and youth by Kythe Foundation, fundraising activities such as sale of art work and products by persons with Hemophilia and their families, testimonials of persons with Hemophilia, medical lectures on hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, video loops in between programs, as well as entertainment by children and adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

There will also be a blood donation campaign with the assistance of the Philippine Red Cross.

The activity is co-organized by HAPLOS and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC). It is supported by Glorietta

PRO Earth Run 2015

In its Global Climate Risk Index 2015, Germanwatch listed the Philippines as one of the countries most affected by extreme weather events in 2013. It also reconfirmed that "less developed countries are generally more affected [by extreme weather] than industrialized countries, and forewarned that “if mitigation efforts are not immediately taken, the world will continue heading down the path towards dangerous climate change.”Is it a downward spiral from here?

Prayerfully, no. As surely as "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” so is the race to protect, respect, and oversee care for Mother Earth.

To increase awareness on environmental responsibility, join and raise funds for Earth Day Network Philippines; continuing projects and programs, on its second year the PRO Earth Run 2015 on 25 April, 4:30AM, at the Mall of Asia Grounds in Pasay City!

The Real Measure of Success and Intelligence

The time has come to explore and recognize the different forms of intelligences to help children achieve the most success. Understanding that success isn’t solely based on how good a child is in math or science means giving the chance to recognize their ability to be good at other things as well, eventually creating a generation that possess multiple intelligences.  “We continue to seek ways for parents and educators to recognize that developing multiple intelligence is just as relevant as academic performance, giving kids today the chance to develop their inherent skills in a motivated and well-rounded environment,” says Rhea Villareal, Senior Product Manager, Progress Pre-School GOLD.

“Multiple intelligence can spark multiple achievements – it is the edge that this new generation will have.”

This edge is perhaps best exemplified by some of this country’s young multi-achievers who were recently recognized at Progress Pre-School GOLD’s Multiple Intelligence Recognition Day. Among them are Sofia Pablo, whose excellence in academics is complemented only by equally impressive achievements in dance and sports; Cedric Rafael Uson, whose potential for leadership and the arts are notable; Sean Clarence Cai, who consistently impresses others with his propensity for numbers and excellentinterpersonal skills at such a young age; Luis Raphael Danao, whose academic achievements are rivaled only by his passion and excellence in sports; and Ciara Russegger, whose athleticism and academic inclinations prove that a seamless integration of brain, body and people smart is possible with the right support.

Kim Atienza, multi-achiever and Commencement speaker in the Multiple Intelligence Recognition Day, also expressed that his well-rounded character has been key in achieving success in life.

“Multiple Intelligence has equipped me to confidently engage with the world and readily accept challenges with family, passions, and career,” says Atienza.

Improving access to multiple intelligence

Progress Pre-school GOLD’s multiple intelligence advocacy has the opportunity to transform development approaches simply by highlighting the fact that various facets of intelligence combine to create a balanced and successful child that can potentially change the world.

As a means to further promote multiple intelligence, Wyeth is partnering with the Reading Association of the Philippines (RAP), a non-government organization committed to improve all aspects of the national reading programs and teaching procedures through teacher-training and research.

RAP calls educators to embrace a comprehensive curriculum to promote students’ maximum participation for overall development. It educates school teachers using proven progressive methods to teach kids to learn to read and enhance comprehension — thus, facilitate a better learning environment to help students to progress into multi-achievers.

Moving up and choosing multiple intelligence

Progress Pre-school GOLD encourages Filipino moms to move upto a more progressive approach to parenting as expertsprove that young minds gain knowledge through play, direct experience and social interaction.

“As a parent, my challenge is to help my kids apply their knowledge to everyday life, not just by getting good grades but by being well-rounded individuals that are smart, creative and helpful,” says Jenni Epperson, Multiple Intelligence advocate.
Activities have become open-ended and interdisciplinary and the more kids exposed to different fields and interests, the more they are able to perform better and beyond given measures.

“With multiple intelligence, you don’t just go one step ahead, you go twice as far,”says Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez, Multiple Intelligence advocate.

Progressive moms have a partner in Progress Pre-School GOLD as they further support the development of their child’s multiple intelligence. Progress Pre-School GOLD is now with its best-ever GOLD Biofactors System with higher levels of DHA, Choline and Lutein to support a child’s multiple intelligence.

Surf 7107-La Union by Reef

Reef, the US’ top name in surf and sand apparel, has launched a new collection of shoes and sandals. Featuring Reef’s Swellular™ Technology, the collection will be presented in time with the premier of “Surf 7107-La Union,” a documentary following the lifestyle of Filipino surfers in San Juan, La Union. As part of Reef’s Just Passing Thru campaign, here’s more about their groundbreaking new shoes and sandals this summer

1. What is Reef presenting today?

We’re presenting our new Rover Collection, a nod to the brand’s Just Passing Through mentality. This is a new line of men’s and women’s footwear designed with a traveling surfer in mind. The collectiion also showcases Reef Swellular™ Technology in our footwear. We’re also hosting the premier of Surfing 7107, a documentary on the surfer lifestyle here in the Philippines.

2. What is Swellular™ Technology?

Reef Swellular™ Technology is built around three layers of innovative material: a super-soft, contoured Swellular foam deck, providing instant comfort, a medium-density Swellular midsole for long-lasting support, and Reef’s signature Swellular high-density rubber outsole featuring an ocean-inspired aesthetic, providing traction, protection and durability. The Outsole is an example of Reef’s commitment to form and function, with treadpatterns that mimic lines of ocean waves and ultimate comfort, support, traction, and versatility.3. What are the highlights of the Reef fashion show? Our guests will see two outfit changes from head to toe. We’d really like them to see what Swellular™ Technology can offer and want them to enjoy and experience the beach. Reef style and comfort are perfect for a Holy Week vacation.

4. What is Surf 7107 about? What makes it special? Surf 7107 is about surfing in the Philippines, and how much surfing has impacted lesser known places around the country, and has turned these places into booming and burgeoning surf destinations and tourist havens. The first of hopefully many documentaries, it starts in La Union where the first ever surf school in the country was born.

There is a market for surf brands out there, and it's getting bigger and bigger. Here's hoping that this Reef-produced documentary changes things, and brings Reef into the forefront as the leading surf brand out there.Reef is a surf brand that not only cares about surfing and the lifestyle that goes with it, but also cares about the communities it helps and touches through surfing competitions, events, and environmental activities. This is the call to action of this documentary produced and supported by Reef Philippines.

5. How is the documentary related to Reef?

Reef is all about the Surfing lifestyle.  The documentary shows just that, how a little known town in La Union has grown to be a tourist and surfing destination, how surfing has helped the community with jobs as surfing instructors, how local business has sprouted with resto-bars, surf shops, and surf schools, and how support from brands such as Reef can mean a lot to a community bornn from surfing.

THE BEGINNING

Reef's twenty-eight year heritage traces back to two brothers from Argentina, Fernando and Santiago “Santi” Aguerre. Fueled by their passion for surfing, and armed with a unique entrepreneurial spirit, the brothers acted on an idea to create a high quality, active lifestyle sandal. Attracted to the Southern California lifestyle, Santi moved to California in the early 80’s and would shortly be reunited with his brother. Fernando graduated from Law School, and headed to La Jolla to help co-found Reef. With $4000 working capital, hard work, dedication and some savvy marketing ideas, the brothers built Reef into the #1 sandal brand. Reef's official Birthday, recognized as “Saint Reef” day is Monday November 26th, 1984 – the day of the first sandal factory trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

PRODUCT

In 1985, Reef introduced the Striped Smoothy, a super soft and comfortable sandal with a nylon strap and large Reef logo on the heel. The bold striped colors and casual, comfy footbed made it an instant classic. Sales of the sandal exploded as the brothers invested in their first advertisements – an image of the sandal embedded in an exotic island scene. The Smoothy is still in the line today, and is one of the best selling Reef sandals of all time. Now twenty-five years later, the company is thriving as one of the leading surf brands in the world offering authentic and innovative footwear and apparel for guys and girls. Expanding from staple every day beach sandals to becoming a leader in major comfort and novelty innovations, Reef has evolved from its humble sandal beginnings. The range now includes a men’s apparel division launched in 2003, followed by the launch of girl’s swimwear in 2008.  Reef also recently launched Reef Redemption; a program intended to lessen our footprint on the Environment. Reef Redemption initiatives thrive through a product series using green technology, our culture of giving and our was founded on by Fernando and Santi back in 1984. Reef is a core surf company. We create authentic, comfortable and innovative products intended to inspire the surfer in all of us.

Thinking Man's Classroom - Four Alternative Online Show

With today’s landscape of information and technology dominating media and the web, it is easy to say things without really thinking about what we say. Such a condition reduces and simplifies the contemporary world in all its complexity. At the same time, however, these advances in the availability and growth of information and technology also brings about the possibility of bypassing traditional means and modes of production and exchange, one of which is education.

An online channel featuring 4 shows initially, Thinking Man’s Classroom envisions itself as an avenue for the free discussion of ideas and culture, with several podcasts segmented, highlighting different aspects of reinventing education.

First of these is The Museum of Randomly Perfected Broken Bodies, a story telling show with a darker angle on life's little secrets, little untold stories which cuts through the usual limits of what can be said. Hosting this show is Manu Respall, a visionary conceptual artist, a character actor, a poet, writer and an explorer of realms. Manu believes that there is beauty to all the madness in the world. With random characters guesting in the show to contribute in its subtle abstraction, the stories will be written by Manu himself.

Second in the line-up of shows is Random Fandom, a show designed to turn up the geek inside all of us, whether it be movies, shows, toys or pop culture. Hosting this show is Jon Sideño, a book enthusiast and an avid fan of Star Trek and James Bond.

Next is Principals of Principle, a talk show turning to matters of philosophy and opinion in free-wheeling discussions among its hosts. Principals of Principle brings together a panel of people from different walks of life to exchange ideas which aim to present as many sides of the topic as possible. Hosting this show are sci-fi enthusiast Nii Foronda, journalist Alma Anonas-Carpio, VJ-presenter Angel Jones, poet-critic Vince Dioquino, cathecist Kim Tengco and photographer-activist Niccolo Cosme.

Last but certainly not least of Thinking Man’s Classroom’s lineup is For Word and By Word, a show about the power of words over a population of upright creatures that communicate through sound and gesture, performance and imagination. Hosted by performance poet, educator and radio host Kooky Tuason, the show aims to prove that words are more powerful than an army of armed warriors in the arena of life because we are moved by words and live by them.

Born through Kooky’s vision of helping out fellow artists and forged through her innovating initiative, Thinking Man’s Classroom aspires at becoming a space for different people to freely discuss what is happening in today's world. Directed by Clayshop's August Lyle Espino, Thinking Man’s Classroom premieres February 23, 2015. Stay up to date and follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

Here are reasons why you will like this soap:

It is FDA Approved,
Philippine made

Main Ingredients:

Glutathione

A natural anti-oxidants that eradicates toxins or free radicals in the body. As Glutathione properties is synthesized into a Glutathione soap, it inhibits the melanin formation and eliminates melasma, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, freckles, dark spots. This results to a natural skin lightening.

Collagen

Vitamin E and C

Antioxidant properties that promotes natural skin repair. Both neutralize free radicals and aids development of your body’s natural glutathione.

History of Sofia’s Glutathione soap with Kojic and Collagen according to Ms. Sofia:

While my boyfriend, husband now, and I were still dating in college, we always bought and sold stuff through bazaars so we could fund our dates. With these experiences, I started  dreaming of having my own business. Naturally, when I finally entered the corporate world, I started my online business and my first product was Glutathione Injections. When the growth of competition was getting bigger, we needed to transcend from it. So, we thought of creating our own glutathione soap and include it in our glutathione injection set. With the help of a toll manufacturer, we were able to create our all-in-one soap. It’s very creation was a free item of our glutathione injection set. It was a come on to generate clients. It came a surprise when all our clients kept on convincing us to sell our soap separately. After six months of giving it for free and with the intention of making our clients happy, we officially launched Sofia’s Glutathione Soap with Kojic and Collagen and sold it at Php 100 per bar.

Today, SVR Infinity have more than 400 resellers and  50 distributors and 2 executive distributors.
